Publishers and editors can apply these practices and principles based on their situations, and we hope that we as a scholarly community will continue building on this collective knowledge of DEIA best practices.
The resources presented in this Focused Toolkit are the collective efforts of members of the Society for Scholarly Publishing’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Committee, who have diverse backgrounds and experiences in different publishing organizations. We hope that the ideas in this Toolkit will prove useful to you as editors and publishing professionals in fostering greater engagement with your communities in the editorial and peer review processes.
Our goal with this Toolkit is to suggest actionable steps, which can be implemented and built on as we share lessons learned and grow our collective knowledge of DEIA in the editorial process. We recognize that what is feasible and most impactful will vary for each editorial team, publisher, and discipline. However, all editors and publishers can contribute to the development of best practices in equitable, diverse, and inclusive scholarly publishing by incorporating inclusive actions, communicating with diverse representatives of our communities to gain feedback on actions taken, and conducting research on what works best. Ultimately, we hope that all scholars will find a sense of belonging in their chosen fields and have equitable pathways for acquiring skills, sharing knowledge, and seeking editorial roles. Likewise, we hope all authors will be beneficiaries of equitable peer review processes.
